I was looking at him. “I just think it’s kind of amazing, that’s all.”
He returned my gaze, looking long and deep into my eyes. Neither of us had noticed us drawing so close. There didn’t seem to be enough air between us. “When did you grow up so fast, Melanie?” he asked after a minute, his voice soft.

“No,” I said simply. I had spent almost an hour, torn between needing to look good and being terrified that he’d be able to tell how much I cared about how I looked for him. Now I wanted him to know. Now it seemed important that he understand what I had done for him.
